Finding, building, and nurturing your community of practice with the resources you have

Sep 27

Panel

Communities of practice help us connect with folks who value content, experience, and meaning. Ideally, we’d all have access to this. But where do you find those people in your workplace? What if you’re a freelancer or solo practitioner, or you don’t have a workplace right now?

It’s possible (and important) to maintain community through the good, bad, and everything in between. Panelists will draw from their experiences running communities and events, and share practical strategies for building belonging while democratizing opportunities and responsibilities. They’ll discuss methods to support members and organizers — with or without dedicated staff, time, or budget.

You’ll leave this session knowing:

  • Ways to find and bring together your people — at any level, in any role, in any type of work setting
  • How communities of practice can flourish, with or without budget, structure, and dedicated resources
  • Different setups, formats, and structures for managing communities and their rituals and norms
  • Strategies for taking care of a community and yourself, without getting burnt out

As content designers, we spend so much time answering the same style guide questions or handling microcopy asks. All of this takes away from meaningful high-level strategy work. AI tools can help you become more systems-focused so you can reduce content inconsistencies and maintain a cohesive voice, allowing you and your team to work more effectively.

But … with all the hype surrounding AI writing tools right now, it can be hard to know how to get started using them for your work. By taking a few steps up front (before diving in to experimentation), you can ensure your time is well-spent and feel confident about your decisions.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • How to define content design use cases for AI
  • How to train your AI writing tool
  • Challenges to look out for
