“It’s not you, it’s me”: Writing effective error messages in the digital age

The only thing worse than being in the middle of doing something in an online application and getting an error message is being in the middle of doing something in an online application and getting an error message you have no idea how to fix! A lot of times, error messages are taken for granted and are written as an afterthought.

In this session, we’ll talk about some of the really good and really bad characteristics that make up error messages, and learn how to make sure your error content is as helpful as the rest of your content.

In this session, you’ll learn how to:

  • Distinguish between a good error message and a bad error message.
  • Develop a tone for your error messages that will support your user, where they are, when they encounter the text.
  • Make sure future error messages stay on track.
